Event Overview

New state and local policies have created the need for VMT estimation methods to evaluate the potential VMT – and associated greenhouse gas – impacts of proposed land use projects. Many VMT estimation methods are available today, ranging from regional travel demand models to spreadsheet-based calculations. The simpler “sketch” models have emerged to assist local jurisdictions and planning departments in measuring the VMT effects of land use decisions, and vary in their approach and appropriateness for the breadth of potential development projects and project locations. This has left practitioners with an open question as to which method to use for a particular project and little empirical information to guide their decision.

Presenters Amy Lee and Susan Handy discussed a selection of VMT estimation methods that are available and used case study projects to evaluate the results, applicability, data needs, and practical considerations of each method. Following this presentation was a discussion of the application of VMT quantification tools to current policy in California, provided by guest respondent Chris Ganson from the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research.

This webinar builds upon a recently completed research report from the National Center for Sustainable Transportation, “Evaluation of Sketch-Level VMT Quantification Tools”.

This webinar is approved by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) for 1.5 Certification Maintenance (CM) credits.
